Aggregative cycles evolve as a solution to conflicts in social investment

چکیده

Multicellular organization is particularly vulnerable to conflicts between different cell types when the body forms from initially isolated cells, as in aggregative multicellular microbes. Like other functions of phase, coordinated collective movement can be undermined by cells that spend energy fuelling motion and ‘cheaters’ get carried along. The evolutionary stability behaviours against such typically addressed populations undergo extrinsically imposed phases aggregation dispersal. Here, via a shift perspective, we propose cycles may have emerged way temporally compartmentalize social conflicts. Through an eco-evolutionary mathematical model accounts for individual strategies resource acquisition, address regimes where motility coexist. Particularly interesting oscillatory regime that, similarly life organisms, alternates on timescale several generations prevalent solitary living starvation-triggered aggregation. Crucially, self-organized oscillations emerge result evolution traits associated conflict escalation within aggregates.

Understanding Fashion Cycles as a Social Choice

We present a formal model for studying fashion trends, in terms of three parameters of fashionable items: (1) their innate utility; (2) individual boredom associated with repeated usage of an item; and (3) social influences associated with the preferences from other people. While there are several works that emphasize the effect of social influence in understanding fashion trends, in this paper...

CEO Investment Cycles

This paper documents the existence of a CEO Investment Cycle, in which disinvestment decreases over CEO tenure while investment increases, leading to “cyclical” firm growth in assets as well as in employment. The CEO investment cycle is present for both firings and non-performance related CEO turnovers. Its magnitude is substantial: the estimated difference in investment rate between the first ...

Social (In)Stability, Distributive Conflicts, and Investment in Poor and Rich Economies

A recently much debated issue is why observed investment and growth rates in poor countries are lower than traditional theory predicts. Empirical evidence suggests that social and political instability is a major reason for the divergence between poor and rich countries. However, there is still the unsolved puzzle that the relationship between development and investment rates is not monotonic b...
